SRO-Legkiy overview and history

SRRO-Legkity

SRO-Legkey

The SRO-Legkiy is a Russian assault rifle designed by SRO (Sovremennoye Rossiyskoye Oruzhiye). (Rus.: современное российское оружие) in the year 2019 due to Russia's call for replacing the AK-74 by the year 2021. It was built with the philosophy of familiarity in mind by Kolya Bogdanov, a lead designer, and Artyom Markov, an executive designer, both from SRO.

The Legkiy won against the only other competitor at the time, the VKS-20, due to the gun's performance as well as its likeness to the customary Soviet design of yesteryear.

In 2024, another variant of the weapon named the open-bolt SRO-Zhnets was designed by the same two SRO designers to either replace the PKP Pecheneg Machine Gun or offering an intermediate weight machinegun, bridging the gap between the Pecheneg and the RPK-16. This offer was taken up and it is now one of the standard issue Squad Automatic Weapons of the Russian Special Forces.
