It was developed in response for a shorter variant of the M16 then in widespread use and also to address the inadequacies of the Model 607 SMG (an SMG variant of the M16). Most production model comes without a forward assist and were fed through a 20-round STANAG magazine due to the shortage of the 30-round STANAG magazine and because Colt couldn't produce a reliable 30-round magazine that would fit the M16 (and their subsequent variants) magwell properly. |
